While there are no big changes between the 2020 and 2021 F1 rules, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff says the team’s new car will not be ready until at least 48 hours before shakedown.

Formula 1 will introduce a big rule shakeup in 2022, but in 2021 cars are expected to remain relatively similar to the vehicles from 2020. However, Toto Wolff says this will not change the fact that the car will be worked on until the very last minute.

“The car is far from finished,” the Austrian told RTL.

“It won’t be ready until the final moments leading up to the shakedown, say about 48 hours in advance. At the moment there is not much of the car to see.

“Right now, it looks like someone’s tipped a full lego box around. However, it is impressive to see how the puzzle pieces will fall into place in the run-up to those 48 hours before the shakedown.”

Mercedes’ technical boss James Allison recently explained that the 2021 rules are not as similar to the 2020 rules, as people might think. You can watch him explain the new rules in Mercedes’ recent video.
