Toto Wolff talks about the recent war of words with Red Bull and says Formula 1 “needs content and controversy”, but “certain boundaries” need to be respected.

After the collision between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen at the British Grand Prix, there have been a lot of harsh words said by Christian Horner and Helmut Marko, mostly aimed at Lewis.

Horner and Marko’s words have also included personal attacks of Lewis’ character, and have sparked disgusting racist abuse against his on social media.

Mercedes even issued a statement in which they blasted Red Bull for their “concerted attempt” to “tarnish the good name and sporting integrity of Lewis Hamilton”.

Now Toto Wolff explains controversy is good for Formula 1, but some types of rhetoric should be avoided.

“I think Formula One needs content and controversy,” the Austrian said.

“As long as it is around the sport, it can be quite entertaining. But there are certain boundaries that we need to respect and the sport should unite and not create more polarisation.

“Especially in a sport that cannot be proud of that stage yet about its diversity and equality.

“We need to just get the words right and therefore, let’s aim to de-escalate rather than to fuel,” concluded Wolff.
