Ahead of the F1 summer break Toto Wolff says Mercedes still has “a deficit” to Red Bull, and therefore they are still “the hunters” who have “nothing to lose”.

In Mercedes’ mid-season review team boss Toto Wolff gave his opinion on the 2021 season so far.

“The last few months have been really intense,” the Austrian said.

“We had a good period in early spring, we were able to compete strongly in Portimao and Barcelona and then we had a few races that were really bad, starting with Monaco and then Baku.

“But since then we have somehow found our grip, we have learned, we have discovered how our car performs with the new tyres and I think we returned to a much better place in Silverstone and here in Hungary.”

As for the rest of the season, Wolff believes Mercedes has “nothing to lose”, as they still have a “deficit” to Red Bull.

“We’re really pushing the boundaries and that also means pushing each other to almost the breaking point in order to win the championship.

“The hopes are one thing, the expectations are another thing and the reality can be a different thing too. I think we are the hunters, we approach this with fun.

“There is nothing to lose for us because we have a deficit towards our competitors, so we just have to win and continue the journey with great anticipation”, Mercedes’ team boss said.
