After Mercedes’ subpar performance in Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Qualifying, Toto Wolff says the day “is one to put in the toilet”.
After a fantastic performance at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix, Mercedes was again behind Red Bull and Ferrari at Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Qualifying.
Team boss Toto Wolff says it was a day to forget.
“Today just turned into a toilet day, it is one to put in the toilet,” the Austrian told Sky Sports F1.
“We didn’t get the job done, we went backwards and they [Red Bull and Ferrari] did a step forward.
“We tried the high-downforce, high-drag concept to give us a good race car tomorrow and that was just so slow on the straights that it didn’t give anything.”

In practice George Russell was testing a lower-drag rear wing, and Lewis Hamilton was running the higher-downforce one. In qualifying, though, both were given the higher-downforce component.
Toto explains it was a better option for tomorrow’s race.
“We have the belief that for tomorrow, it is so much better, it has more downforce to protect the tyres.
“Let’s see,” Wolff concluded.
