After a somewhat disappointing Miami Grand Prix Qualifying, Toto Wolff said Mercedes “had a good car yesterday afternoon”, but “worsened it a little bit” today.

Mercedes seemed to improve quite significantly in Friday’s Miami Grand Prix free practice sessions, with George Russell even topping FP2.

However, things seemed to worsen on Saturday, and in Qualifying Russell was ultimately eliminated in Q2, while Lewis Hamilton managed to get P6.

After the session Toto Wolff was asked if Mercedes’ car was handling better than before.

“No not at all,” the Austrian said.

“I think we’ve seen a performant car yesterday in FP2 that was real, we were able to put it in the sweet spot and today in FP3 we were completely off with the experiments we did.

“Creeped a little bit back, but the car is still bouncing like a kangaroo, the drivers are not happy with it, and you can see that is the reason why we are off.”

However, Wolff says the drop in performance has helped the team understand their car better.

“Yeah, definitely got a better handle, also the slump we had from yesterday helped.

“It’s never one thing that is responsible for performance or non-performance, but we had a good car yesterday afternoon, we worsened it a little bit.

“Some things we understand, others not,” he concluded.
