Despite calls to remove the Monaco Grand Prix from the Formula 1 calendar, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff says F1 ‘needs’ Monaco.
There’s no doubt that Monaco is the most historic Formula 1 grand prix, however, unfortunately the size of modern cars is making it almost impossible to overtake on the narrow street circuit.
Due to this problem, most of the recent races in Monaco have been basically high-speed processions. This has caused many to call for the track’s removal from the F1 calendar.
Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff disagrees.
“I think there is a commercial debate to be held but both parties clearly will find a compromise because we need Monaco and Monaco needs Formula 1,” the Austrian said.
“With the track layout, maybe it is wishful thinking.”

However, he doesn’t know which modifications to the track would be possible.
“I wouldn’t know where else we can drive other than around these roads and the tunnel is already fast but I don’t know what can be done.
“Maybe we can just get rid of the chicane at the exit of the tunnel and make it a long straight and then Tabac – I don’t know. No, Tabac would be too fast so maybe some braking there.
“This here is the track designer speaking who has no clue,” joked Wolff.
