Toto Wolff says Red Bull still has an advantage over Mercedes, but the team now believes they “understand where the gap comes from”.
Mercedes has been slowly improving its car throughout the 2022 season, and was even able to challenge Red Bull in the last few races.
Toto Wolff explains the team now knows where they need to improve to be able to mount a consistent challenge.
“[Red Bull] certainly [has] an advantage, but we believe that we understand where the gap comes from,” Wolff said.
“Red Bull will carry over some of the sweetness in their car, and we’ve maybe lost eight-to-ten months in terms of development because we couldn’t figure out what was wrong [with the W13].
“So there is definitely a challenge, but we are playing the long game, all of us.

“Both drivers are playing the long game and I want to judge the team’s performance not based on a single weekend or year, but how we’ve been able to win championships over the long term.”
Toto went on to explain how beating Ferrari for P2 in the Constructors’ Championship would have a good impact on the team, but it’s not a priority.
“It will definitely be some consolation, because Ferrari had the quickest car in the beginning of the season, and finishing ahead of them would be great, but it is not our main priority.
“That is to understand the car and having a quick automobile on the track,” the Austrian concluded.
