Valtteri Bottas says it’s possible for Mercedes to close the gap to Red Bull this Sunday at the Austrian Grand Prix.
There’s no doubt that Red Bull completely dominated last week’s Styrian Grand Prix. Since this weekend’s race is held at the same circuit, it’s only natural to assume that we could end up watching a rerun.
However, Valtteri Bottas says he believes it is possible for Mercedes to close the gap.
“We can [close the gap] and we for sure have been working hard for it,” Bottas said at the Thursday press conference.
“We’ll see a Sunday, but it’s possible. We lack pace against Red Bull, which is not ideal.
“That’s something we tried to learn from in the last week and to be stronger this week, whatever we can do with the car setup and with the softer compounds of tyres to try and get the advantage on our side.”

The Finn has historically performed well at the Red Bull Ring. He was on the podium six times, and last weekend he outqualified his team-mate Lewis Hamilton.
However, he is unable to pinpoint what makes him so strong on this particular circuit.
“It’s hard to say [why I was quick] in Austria. Some places normally you’re immediately on the pace, sometimes it might be more of a struggle.
“I don’t have an explanation, I just like to track,” concluded the Finn.
