After Mercedes proved to have an excellent package at the Qatar Grand Prix, Valtteri Bottas says the team seems to have closed down the gap to Red Bull.

Both Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas had great pace a the Qatar Grand Prix. Lewis won the race, while Bottas had a good chance to finish on the podium, before he suffered a tyre puncture.

The Finn says Mercedes’ performance in Qatar was a surprise for him.

“It was a bit surprising, actually, how good it was,” Bottas said.

“It seems like tracks with high-speed content are pretty good for us. It gives us hope for Saudi.

“We’re on a good run at the moment, good form with good performance. Hopefully, we can keep up the good momentum and good work.”

Valtteri was then asked if he thinks Mercedes has closed down the gap to Red Bull.

“I think so. We’ve learned a lot with the set-up. We’re setting up the car a bit different nowadays than the beginning of the year.”

Since the Qatar GP, Valtteri has been spending time in the simulator to learn the ins and outs of the Jeddah Street Circuit, a completely new track for Formula 1.

“It’s quite high speed. Qatar worked for us and hopefully that will as well. It’s quite similar in terms of overtaking so it will be difficult.

“We’ll see,” concluded the Finn.
