2021 will mark the return of Mercedes power to McLaren, while Sebastian Vettel will get his first opportunity to try out the German engine.
Having signed with Aston Martin for 2021 Sebastian Vettel will get the opportunity to try out Mercedes Formula 1 engines for the first time in his career.
“I’m really looking forward to the new challenge,” the German told F1-Insider.com when asked about driving for Aston Martin.
“I can’t wait for it to finally start.”
Asked about trying out Mercedes’ power unit, Vettel said: “Of course I’m mega-excited to see how it feels.”
In 2021 McLaren will also get the opportunity to feel the power of a Mercedes engine for the first time in the turbo hybrid era. The two companies enjoyed a successful partnership from 1995 until 2013, a partnership that won them three drivers’ and one constructors’ title.

McLaren technical director James Key is very happy with the help Mercedes provided when it comes to adapting the cars to the new power unit.
“We’re in reasonable shape, I think,” Key said on the F1 Nation podcast.
“We’re where we would expect to be at this time of year, despite the obvious delays we had earlier in the year.
“Normally we’d want to start earlier than we did. We obviously didn’t start as early as we’d liked to have, but I think we caught up well.
“The interaction with Mercedes has been fantastic, they’ve been extremely supportive, recognised the fact that we had short timescales. And we’ve worked with them very effectively over the past few months.
“I think we’re where we’d expect to be with the maturity of the engine installation and the parts that we’re already making,” concluded the Briton.
