Mercedes’ Toto Wolff and Andrew Shovlin talk about Nelson Piquet’s racial slur aimed at Lewis Hamilton – “a very important and much-loved member of the team”.

In a recent interview with Kronen Zeitung, Toto Wolff talked about Lewis Hamilton’s mood, now that Mercedes’ car seems to be improving.

“He recently said he was ecstatic,” Wolff said

“This shows how he has zeroed in on new goals. It is a great joy to see that he is happy and completely above things.

“As can be seen from his reactions to certain recent statements.”

Wolff was then asked if he was referring to Nelson Piquet’s recent racist statements aimed at Hamilton.

“And others too,” the Austrian said.

“Something like that is simply superfluous,” he concluded.

Mercedes’ Trackside Engineering Director Andrew Shovlin also gave his comments on this unfortunate situation.

“He is a very important and much-loved member of the team,” Shovlin told Sky Sports.

“Having worked with Lewis for the last 10 years, you can understand a lot of the problems he would have experienced growing up in motorsport, which for a lot of years was a predominantly white British industry.

“That’s why he has put so much of his energy behind changing it and some of the important initiatives we’ve got here; the Accelerate 25, Lewis’ charitable work with the team with Ignite, they are all part of that.

“But he recognises that it takes a lot of time to change prejudice, to change opinions, and that’s why these are all long-term programs,” the Briton concluded.
