Nico Hulkenberg has not had a regular seat in Formula 1 since 2019, but according to Toto Wolff, he can expect a Mercedes role.

At Mercedes’ 2021 car launch Wolff implied Hulkenberg is a serious candidate for a role with Mercedes.

“I don’t want to create any interesting news for Nico,” the Austrian explained when asked if Hulkenberg could get a role with Mercedes, perhaps as a reserve driver.

“We all know what he can do and that he is one of the top drivers who somehow didn’t get a chance to drive at a top team, because I think he could definitely do it.

“Having such a resource in the team is of course interesting. Of course we are not averse to that either.

“Therefore, the question is not when the decision will be made, but when it will be announced,” concluded Wolff.

On the day of the launch Mercedes announced their Formula E duo of Stoffel Vandoorne and Nyck de Vries as their reserve drivers for 2021.
