Toto Wolff praises Lewis Hamilton for publicly admitting his crash with Oscar Piastri was his fault, and adds “pretty much everyone is always complaining and moaning just to try to not get a penalty”.

After Lewis Hamilton’s crash with Oscar Piastri at the Italian Grand Prix, the Briton immediately admitted he was at fault, and went to apologize to Piastri.

After the race, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff also said the incident was Lewis’ fault.

“Yeah, that was Lewis’ mistake,” he said.

“I think a five-second penalty for that is what the menu says. These things happen, it’s hard racing.

“You’ve got to overtake here and we’ve seen a few of these. It’s justifiable.”

Toto then praised Lewis for admitting his mistake, and said this shows what a sportsman he is.

“He’s very sportsmanlike with these things, he is the only one that I see out there admitting and saying: ‘I got this wrong’.

“We just had a chat, [and Lewis said], ‘I didn’t see him on the right and it was on me’. That kind of sportsmanship is what you need to admire with him.

“Pretty much everyone is always complaining and moaning just to try to not get a penalty,” Wolff concluded.
