According to Corriere dello Sport, Toto Wolff said that if Red Bull is not properly sanctioned for their cost cap breach, “Mercedes is ready to plan extra budget and related fine to recover performance and return to the top”.

Last Monday the FIA announced that Red Bull has been found to be in breach of the 2021 budget cap.

Unfortunately, the FIA did not disclose any details of the breach, now did it announce a penalty, so there is a lot of speculation in the media regarding what the punishment should be.

According to Corriere dello Sport, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff warned that, if Red Bull is not properly sanctioned, his team could in the future break the cost cap on purpose.

“If Red Bull had overspent by two million, they could close the matter by paying the FIA five times, therefore 10 million,” the Austrian said.

“And in any case it would not be fair because it would sanction the right to cheat by paying a fine.

“Mercedes have already talked about it and, if this were really the point of failure, Mercedes is ready to plan extra budget and related fine to recover performance and return to the top,” the Austrian concluded.

There’s no doubt that if Red Bull gets off lightly, this would be the thinking from most F1 teams, and the budget cap would ultimately be meaningless.
