When asked about the possibility of Mercedes signing Sebastian Vettel, Toto Wolff praised the German driver, but remained coy.
The speculation about where Sebastian Vettel will end up in 2021 rages on after it was announced he will not continue with Ferrari beyond 2020. One of the destinations observers keep bringing up is Mercedes, especially because of the marketing possibilities of having a German driver in a German team. However Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff maintains the team’s priority are their current drivers.
“The Vettel idea would be fantastic from a German point of view, but we must remain true to our principles,” said Wolff in an interview with RTL.
“Loyalty is important and one of our values. I know Vettel as a person, he is very straightforward and represents values similar to those that I have.
“As an athlete, he is a four-time World Champion, so it is not necessary to discuss his performance.”
However, Wolff’s future with Mercedes is also in question. The Austrian’s deal expires at the end of 2020 and Mercedes itself is also yet to sign a new agreement with Formula 1 that would guarantee the manufacturer’s participation in the championship beyond 2020.
As a shareholder at Mercedes, Wolff says his overall position with the company is currently being negotiated.
“It’s not only about whether I extend my contract as team boss, but also what we do with this bigger partnership,” explained Wolff to Austrian broadcaster ORF.
“And that’s what we’re discussing right now.”
