It’s safe to say that Mercedes has been struggling with their car since the start of the 2022 season. There were some positive moments – like the obvious improvement they had in Barcelona – but overall it hasn’t been an easy time for the team.
In an interview with Kronen Zeitung Toto Wolff was asked about Mercedes’ recovery process.
“[We want to recover] as early as possible but, in this sport, some things take time,” the Austrian said.
“For me, personally, it’s boring. No emotions are released when I have to watch that we can’t fight for victories. But we’ll do everything we can to catch up.”
As for Lewis Hamilton’s performance, Toto warned not to write him off.
“Lewis was brilliant at Barcelona. Writing him off would be a very foolish mistake.”

As for Mercedes’ performance in Barcelona, Wolff said it must not be taken as an absolute indication that the W13’s problems have been solved.
“You have to be careful there. It used to be said that, if you are strong in Barcelona, the whole season will be good. That is no longer the case.
“We mustn’t fall into the mode of picking out individual laps and saying we were good there. We’re rather skeptical, want to find out what worked in Barcelona – and we want to build on that.”
Wolff compared Mercedes’ situation to when Fernando Alonso showed good pace during the Australian Grand Prix weekend.
“Fernando Alonso would have been on the front row in Melbourne if he hadn’t lost his gearbox.
“And does Alpine now say: ‘We have a car for pole?’ No!” he concluded.
