I was as gobsmacked as everyone else when I received the news that Sir Lewis Hamilton would be going to Ferrari in 2025.

He is such a global icon, that this news broke the internet and made Ferrari suddenly even more financially prosperous when their shares went up. I have followed Lewis ever since he won his first championship in 2008. It was interesting to see how much criticism he got when he moved to Mercedes in 2013, but also very gratifying to see how he proved all the doubters wrong.

During his 11 years with Mercedes, I have also developed huge respect for Toto Wolff, who clearly  values Lewis as a driver and a close friend, and Lewi’ race engineer Bono, who utters the immortal words, “Come on Lewis, it’s hammertime“. During these 11 years their success together has yielded 6 more championships for Lewis, and 8 constructors’ titles. All this will go down in history.

After  the injustice of Abu Dhabi 2021, when the rules regarding the safety car were changed, Lewis lost the title in contentious circumstances. However in 2022 he came back fighting, and for all of that season, and the year after that, he worked hard to inspire his team of engineers to improve the car. His loyalty to Mercedes has been very inspiring.

What we as fans must remember is that he is now 39 years old, and in the twilight of his career. He has been sought after by Ferrari because he is the most decorated driver, who can still match and beat drivers much younger than himself. He has given his all to Mercedes for a long time, and you only get one life, he so deserves this opportunity at Ferrari. His bravery in taking on a new challenge when he will be 40 is truly amazing.

So, please join me in wishing Lewis all the best, this is truly a courageous move. In the meantime, thank you Mercedes for giving him a great car for all those years, so he could deliver all those championships. My biggest wish is he can earn his eighth championship with Mercedes this year, that would surely be a happy ending to a wonderful partnership.
