Sir Lewis Hamilton has questioned the Catholic Church, and is standing firm with Sir Elton John about discrimination shown towards gay marriages. He shared an Instagram post written by Sir Elton which read:
“How can the Vatican refuse to bless gay marriages because they ‘are sin’, yet happily make a profit from investing millions in ‘Rocketman’ – a film which celebrates my finding happiness from my marriage to David??”
Sir Lewis wrote his response on Instagram:
“Standing in solidarity with Elton John and the whole LGBTQ+ community on this issue.
“It is unacceptable that in this day and age, anyone should face prejudice or discrimination based on the person they love, especially in the name of God who we are told loves us all equally.”
He then added:
“It is incredibly sad that many will now feel they have to choose between their faith and being their true self, and I want my followers to know that I stand with you and I support you, and you deserve happiness.
“Love is love, don’t let anyone tell you differently.”

Back in 2017 Sir Lewis spoke to Interview Magazine, explaining that he used to be shy about his Catholic beliefs, and the fact he had a relationship with God, but once he got into Formula One, he started to embrace it and it felt comfortable for him to show it.
He has also used his platform as a seven-time world champion to try and help raise awareness of other real world issues with his support of the Black Lives Matter movement, and he has even set up his own Hamilton Commission, which seeks to provide equal opportunities to black people participating in motorsport. Mercedes has backed him 100 percent, and even formed an equal partnership to help raise awareness of these issues.
Sir Lewis now follows a plant based vegan diet, his love of animals is well known, and he also frequently voices his concerns about the Ozone layer, and the future of the planet. He is a man who wears two hats. When he is in the car, he is entirely focused on trying to win races, but it does not stop him from caring about others.
He has been criticised by a few for airing his beliefs, but most people are inspired by his words. The legacy he will leave behind is not only as a unique and very talented driver, but also as a man who truly cares about others.
The 2021 Formula One season commences next week, and it has already been noted that Mercedes are struggling with the new car. So, the fans can look forward to seeing our British champion fight for his eighth title, and he will, because when the going gets tough, the tough get going.
Good luck Sir Lewis, we are right behind you!
