The FIA cancelled both of today’s free practice sessions because the medical helicopter wasn’t able to fly due to poor weather.
This means there will be no running before tomorrow’s third free practice session. FIA Race Director Michael Massi explains why the sessions had to be cancelled.
“The weather actually and dampness is fine,” said Masi.
“It’s actually the medical helicopter which is not able to fly to the receiving hospitals due to fog.
“We had the broadcast helicopter that’s flying only around the circuit, [but] to fly to any of the hospitals should something happen, it’s not possible, so therefore from a safety perspective we would not start the session.

The Nurburgring hasn’t been a part of Formula 1’s calendar since 2013, which means the teams have no real data on how today’s cars will run there. Still there is no word on any changes being made to tomorrow’s schedule.
“[For the rest of the weekend] the forecast looks better, but we are also working on some backup plans should we have a similar situation to be able to work around,” continued Massi.
“We are working on those as we speak. We’ll work on the backup plans and advise everyone accordingly at the time.”
So, as it stands right now, it seems the teams will only get an hour of practice before they go straight into qualifying. We will keep you updated on any changes to tomorrow’s schedule.
