Daimler CEO Ola Källenius praises Lewis Hamilton for equalling Michael Schumacher’s record and promoting the Mercedes brand around the world.

At the Eifel Grand Prix Lewis Hamilton made history by equalling Michael Schumacher’s 91 career wins record. Källenius says he “is the right driver” to do it.

“First of all I’d just like to say that Michael Schumacher is an icon, he’s a legend, so he stands there on his own,” Källenius told Channel 4.

“This is a very special day. To reach those 91 wins, nobody thought that could be done.

“I think Lewis is the right driver to do it, what he has done over the years is amazing and if we add his pole-setting record to that it’s something for the history books really.”

With Lewis Hamilton’s contract with Mercedes expiring at the end of 2020, Källenius praises the Briton’s contributions to the Mercedes brand and says the company wants to keep him in the team.

“This does so much for us, for the brand and technology transfer to our high performance cars at the AMG, generally building the brand around the world.

“And the combination of Lewis and Mercedes has obviously been a very successful one and one that we would like to continue.”

But Hamilton is not the only key member of the Mercedes F1 team whose contract expires at the end of the year. Team boss Toto Wolff is yet to extend his contract with the outfit beyond 2020. Källenius says he is “very certain” the Austrian will continue with the team.

“As far as our partnership is concerned, we work very closely together, I am very certain that we will continue that partnership going forward,” concluded Daimler’s CEO.
