Former F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone surprisingly says he hopes Lewis Hamilton will be able to win his eighth title, because “he would then make history”.

Former Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone has had some questionable things to say about Lewis Hamilton in the past.

Ecclestone even expressed his wish for Michael Schumacher to remain the only seven-time champion in the sport, and once Lewis equalled that record, he was outspoken about not wanting anybody to surpass Michael.

Back in 2021, in the middle of a tight title battle between Lewis and Max Verstappen, Ecclestone expressed his surprise at the fact that Lewis even wants to win an eighth title.

“I’m surprised Lewis didn’t say at the beginning of the year: ‘I’m stepping down, I don’t want to win more races or World Championships than Michael,’” he told RTL at the time.

However, now when he was asked about Lewis’ bid to win his eighth title, Ecclestone said he hopes he will be able to do it.

“I hope he makes it,” the 93-year-old told Sky Germany.

“He would then make history,” he concluded.
