Last year at the Austrian Grand Prix, there were a lot of reports of sexist, homophobic and racist abuse at the Red Bull Ring. Lewis Hamilton hopes it was “a one off”.

Last year during the Austrian Grand Prix weekend, there were numerous reports of sexist, homophobic and racist abuse at the Red Bull Ring, perpetrated by fans in attendance.

Most of these fans were reportedly Max Verstappen and Red Bull fans, as they turn up every year in large numbers.

SilverArrows.Net columnist Alexia Tibil was at the track in person last year, and we published her own experience in her “Alexia’s Take” column.

This year, ahead of the race weekend Lewis Hamilton said he hopes things will be different this year.

“Especially coming to such a beautiful place, it was definitely sad to hear what happened last year,” Hamilton said.

“I do know that Formula 1 has taken action to make some changes here this weekend but I still feel there is work that needs to be done.

“Ultimately, potentially the same group of people could turn up and we just need to be very strong in our stance of how we expect people to be within this space that’s inclusive for anybody.

“I hope last year was a one off, fingers crossed,” the Briton concluded.
