Red Bull’s Helmut Marko and Adrian Newey imply Mercedes dominated the turbo hybrid era because of “superior engine performance”.

Mercedes has been the dominant force in Formula 1 from the beginning of the turbo hybrid era in 2014, and has won the Constructors’ Championship eight times in a row, before losing out to Red Bull in 2022.

When asked about the most important piece of the puzzle to be able to win a championship in Formula 1, Red Bull’s Chief Technical Officer Adrian Newey said it was the power unit.

“A decent engine,” Newey said.

“We started the turbo hybrid era and Renault didn’t get it right. That was pretty depressing.”

The team’s advisor Dr Helmut Marko on the other hand openly stated that he believes Mercedes’ performance was mostly due to having a superior engine.

“The Mercedes dominance was due to superior engine performance,” he said.

“At least for the first four years,” the Austrian concluded.
