Valtteri Bottas on whether he’s “allowed” to fight for the 2021 title

Valtteri Bottas has a 96 point deficit to championship leader and team-mate Lewis Hamilton, which naturally leads to questions on whether his title challenge is over.

Although Valtteri Bottas could still mathematically win the 2021 Drivers’ Championship, it is not very likely due to his 96 point deficit to championship leader and team-mate Lewis Hamilton.

Taking into account the fact that the championship battle between Hamilton and Max Verstappen is very close, it’s only natural that Bottas could be asked to help out his team-mate if the situation calls for it.

For this reason, the Finn was asked if he thinks Mercedes will even allow him to fight for the championship in the last seven races of the season.

“I think in Formula 1 you just never know how the season progresses,” Bottas said.

“There’s still a fair amount of races, so you know, never say never. Only thing I will keep doing anyways is try my best and try to win races; try being as consistent as I can [to] bring the points.

“If I’m allowed? I don’t know really, you’d have to ask Toto, but for sure it’s still a reasonable gap in the points and at least earlier on in the season I felt like I wasn’t really any more allowed for the contention.

“But you never know.”

Ultimately Bottas says his only goal in Formula 1 is to win.

“We go race by race. Only thing in my mind is winning, you know? That’s all that matters to me,” concluded the Finn.
