Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff says “the car was not quick enough” on the medium tyre, and concedes Red Bull “deserved to win today”.

After a close and hard fought Unites States Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton unfortunately did not manage to beat Max Verstappen.

After the race Toto Wolff conceded Mercedes simply wasn’t good enough to beat Red Bull today.

“I think it was some interesting strategy games and great racing,” the Austrian told Sky Sports.

“We thought we had a sniff at the end. The moment you get close to a car it’s hard. They went for a super aggressive first stop… that was bold.”

“We did that in Bahrain at the beginning of the year and we won. We thought maybe that’s enough at the end to get them, but they deserved to win today.”

Wolff went on to congratulate Red Bull on their performance.

“They deserved to win today. The car was not quick enough on the medium. We were debating about the undercut but lap 11 or 12 was too early. We were too slow on the Medium and therefore we didn’t think that the Hard would last.”

Ultimately Toto says Mercedes’ pace at the Circuit of the Americas wasn’t good enough.

“P2 is better than expected. It’s a fine line between downforce and drag.”

As for the next race in Mexico, the Austrian acknowledged the track is usually not strong for Mercedes.

“Mexico is a track that is traditionally hard for us but this season everything can change. It’s race by race,” concluded Mercedes’ team boss.
