Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff says his alleged comments that Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen would crash on purpose in the final race of the season were misinterpreted.

In an interview with the Daily Mail Toto Wolff talked about the title battle between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen, and said something that many media outlets picked up on:

“If it was to come to the scenario of the last race in Abu Dhabi and they were to be racing each other for the title, whoever is in front is absolutely going to try to do the same as in the Senna-Prost years,” the Austrian said.

This statement was later blasted by Verstappen and Red Bull team boss Christian Horner, while Hamilton said he doesn’t believe Wolff would say that they would crash on purpose.

Well, the Austrian himself now explains his statement was misinterpreted by the media.

“You ask the right questions and then you get answers that can be seen as controversial and polarizing,” Toto said.

“That’s great for the sport. I think the rivalry between the teams and drivers is important for the story of the sport.

“I’ve been quoted as saying it would end up in a crash. I never said that.

“I said that if it was to go down in the last race and it was about defending your position or not, I could see these guys racing each other hard, and if that could end up in an accident, I think it could end up in an accident.”

Wolff also commented on the recent war of words between him and Horner.

“He enjoys the fight in the same way I do, even though we are two completely different people.

“I respect his work as a team boss and he contributes to the show,” Mercedes’ team boss concluded.
