Hamilton and Verstappen nominated for Driver of the Year Award

Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen have been nominated for the 2021 International Driver of the Year Autosport Award.

The Autosport Awards are awarded annually by British racing magazine Autosport and the winners are voted for by the readers.

The most prestigious of the awards given out is the International Driver of the Year Award, and this year’s nominees are Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, 2021 Formula E champion (with Mercedes) Nyck de Vries and 2021 IndyCar champion Alex Palou.

Lewis has won the award last year and on eight other occasions, more than any other driver since the award was instituted in 1982. Previous winners include Ayrton Senna, Michael Schumacher, Mika Hakkinen and Sebastian Vettel, as well as fellow British drivers: Nigel Mansell, Damon Hill and Jenson Button.

Mercedes has also been nominated in the second most important category – International Racing Car of the Year. The nominated car are the Mercedes W12, the Red Bull RB16B, the Mercedes-EQ Silver Arrow 02 that helped de Vries win the 2021 Formula E title, and the Toyota GR010 Hybrid that won this year’s Le Mans.

Future Mercedes driver George Russell  has also been nominated in the British Competition Driver of the Year category.
