Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff says the team “completely expected” their review request would not “go any further”, but they wanted to “trigger a discussion”.

The FIA announced today that Mercedes have been denied a right of review for Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton‘s incident at the Brazilian Grand Prix.

Even before FIA’s decision was made public, Wolff explained Mercedes’ reasons for going through with the request.

“We don’t expect to gain anything, to be honest, from the right of review,” the Austrian told Sky Sports F1.

“It’s more about the principle and the philosophy, because if it remains that way it means overtaking from the outside is pretty much not possible anymore, because the inside controls the corner completely.

“Now that is anyway the case, but before when a car is next to you, you need to leave a car’s width. That’s not the case, so we just want to take it to the end, have a judgement on that and ask if it’s necessary for the last few races.”

After the FIA announced their decision, the Austrian again gave his comments.

“Completely expected,” Wolff said.

“We wanted to trigger a discussion around it because probably it will be a theme in the next few races and I think that objective is achieved.

“We didn’t really think it would go any further,” concluded Mercedes’ team boss.
