Toto Wolff says Mercedes needs to “catch up, make some points up” in the final two races of the season, “and this is just what we’re going to do”.

After Lewis Hamilton dominantly won the Qatar Grand Prix, and reduced Max Verstappen’s drivers’ championship lead to eight points, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff is looking ahead at the final two races of the 2021 season.

“If you would have told us it’s gonna go to Saudi Arabia or to the end of the season, we would have taken that,” the Austrian said.

“I think we started on the back foot, we just weren’t good enough. Regulations didn’t go our way and you have to take it on the chin.

“Therefore, whoever wins the championship merits winning the championship, and it’s [losing] gonna cost me maybe a sleepless night, maybe two.

“It would be annoying, but we can take it, it’s not the end of the world. We will come back, we would come back strong. We would come back strong next season and the seasons to come.

“We’ve got to push, maximum attack. We’ve got to catch up, make some points up. And this is just what we’re going to do.”

Asked by Sky Sports F1 which wing the team will use in Saudi Arabia, Wolff joked: “A small one. Maybe we won’t put a rear wing on it at all”.

And speaking of the engine, the Austrian hinted that Mercedes did not use the best one they have in Qatar.

“No, in Saudi Arabia we are pulling the pin out of the grenade. There and in Abu Dhabi we need that fire too.

“If they both cross the finish line in Saudi Arabia, the winner of Abu Dhabi will also win the championship,” concluded Mercedes’ team boss.
