Hamilton has written “a nice message” for departing Giovinazzi

Antonio Giovinazzi will leave Alfa Romeo and Formula 1 at the end of 2021. The Italian reveals he has received messages of support from several drivers, including Lewis Hamilton.

Antonio Giovinazzi will be replace at Alfa Romeo by Chinese driver Guanyu Zhou, who will be Valtteri Bottas’ team-mate in 2022.

The Italian will however continue his career in Formula E and as Ferrari’s reserve driver. It’s never easy when you Formula 1 dream comes to an end, so Giovinazzi has received messages of support from several drivers.

The Italian reveals one of those drivers was the seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, who has been known to act as support and mentor for several younger drivers.

“Both Hamilton and Verstappen have written me a nice message and they are things you appreciate because it means they follow you,” Giovinazzi said.

“I raced with Max in 2015 in Formula 3 and so I already knew him very well, and so they are gestures you appreciate very much.

“But not only from them, also [Pierre] Gasly, [Esteban] Ocon and [Sergio] Perez.”

Antonio also reveals luck did not follow him this year in Formula 1.

“Bad luck is unfortunately part of the sport and I hoped sooner or later everything would have turned out in my favour, but until now we have not had good luck on our side.

“This season we could have achieved much more than we have and that’s a shame, because it’s a World Championship in which we all work hard.

“We all put in a lot of effort and it’s a shame we didn’t achieve what we expected. But it’s part of sport and life.

“We mustn’t get angry about the past but look forward to the future,” concluded the Italian.
