Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff says the team can cope with losing the 2021 title, so they don’t put themselves under unnecessary pressure.
The battle between Mercedes and Red Bull has been very close in 2021, so close that the titles can still go to either team and their two top drivers.
Toto Wolff says he is not allowing this fact to put unnecessary pressure on his team.
“There is nothing to lose for us, just attacking,” the Austrian said.
“Sometimes I find myself in that situation of trying to put the fires out, but then we are also the team able to step back and say ‘we can cope with the worst outcome’.
“We have been on the back foot all year long in the Championship, if we were able to fight for it in Abu Dhabi that is already great.
“And the team that is going to win merits the win, we don’t want to put ourselves under pressure, that is not necessary.”

Asked if he is having the time of his life this season, Wolff said:
“Yeah, I am. I love fighting, it’s what I’ve needed to do many times in my life.”
Although for the teams the constructors’ title is more important due to the monetary compensation that comes with it, the media and the public put more emphasis on the drivers’ crown. Wolff says both are a priority for Mercedes.
“They are both a priority, I don’t want to write any of them off.
“Andrew Shovlin, who is our trackside engineer, said it would have been constructors‘ all the time, but being part of Lewis’ history, of potentially another drivers’ championship is really special.
“But we’ll take what we’ll get and we’re happy for it,” Wolff concluded.
