Toto Wolff says the result of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix was “the best case scenario” and adds Mercedes’ car was “just stronger”.

By finishing first and taking a point for fastest lap at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix Lewis Hamilton closed the gap to Max Verstappen completely, ahead of the final showdown in Abu Dhabi.

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff says the results of the race were “the best case scenario” for the team.

“We made a big jump forward in the Constructors Championship, and we are on equal points with Max,” the Austrian said on the F1 Nation podcast.

“This is the best case scenario. Whoever wins Abu Dhabi wins the championship.”

Wolff adds that even if Max managed to take pole on Saturday, Mercedes would still have the advantage, because their car was stronger on long runs.

“Even him starting from pole position wouldn’t have made a big difference, because our car was just stronger.

“But the race was so messy, so confusing that I think we could’ve lost the race twice with the damage and at the end to finish first and third is great.”

Asked if the 2021 season is truly, as some say, one of the best F1 season in history, Toto agreed.

“I thought it was such a privilege to be part of such a season. It’s been one of the best it has been. Emotions are running high.

“Whatever the result is, it was an unbelievable ride,” concluded Wolff.
