New FIA president Mohammed ben Sulayem says the FIA will make necessary changes to the rules to prevent a repeat of the Abu Dhabi Gran Prix controversy.

The FIA has promised to perform a review of the events at the end of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Now, newly elected FIA president Mohammed ben Sulayem says the FIA will look into F1’s rules and regulations to determine how to prevent a similar situation in the future.

“We will look into the rules and we are sure that, if any situation like this occurs in the future, we will have an instant solution for it or avoid it even,” he said in a press conference in Paris.

“There are so many areas that we can improve. We cannot just sit and say we are good. No it’s not enough in a sport as heavy, I would say, and as important.

“There is always a place for improvement. We just have to look where can we improve. If you talk to me about the credibility of the FIA, yes, we lie on good structures, and good teams.”

This however doesn’t seem to address the main issue, because there was nothing wrong with the rules, they just weren’t followed and this allowed one driver to unjustly come out on top.

The Safety Car decisions made by race director Michael Masi were in clear breach of the FIA’s rules, and they allowed Max Verstappen to win the race and the title.

Asked if Masi will be removed from his position ben Sulayem said it is too early to say.

“Why do we jump? We’ll have to actually look into the matter. I definitely will not just jump to a conclusion on decisions without going back to my team.

“I have a meeting with the staff, and I will look into every single matter that can be improved,” concluded the FIA’s new president.
