After taking a break from social media for two months, Sir Lewis Hamilton posted these words: “I’ve been gone. Now I’m back!”
The impact that this short statement made was immediate with over one million likes in one hour. This is the fastest ever reaction he has ever enjoyed on social media. Another amazing statistic is that during the period when he unfollowed everyone on Instagram, instead of losing support, his fanbase actually grew with over a million new followers.
Since he lost his eighth championship to Max Verstappen in controversial circumstances on 12th December, the Press and pundits have not let up with their opinions as to whether he is coming back in 2022 to challenge for the championship again. A retirement has been suggested, or at least a year-long sabbatical.
Lewis Hamilton is without a doubt the most talked about driver in Formula One, everyone has an opinion about him, but what has become very clear over the last couple of months is just how important he is to Formula One. I have seen posts on the internet from people who said they were not fans until Abu Dhabi, but because of the grace and class he showed after his “defeat”, they most definitely are now.

I have also seen posts by people who are not his fans, but still do not approve of the way Michael Masi manipulated the championship to favour Verstappen and Red Bull. I myself have had people accuse me of being biased. Of course I am biased, I am a Lewis Hamilton fan writing articles on an unofficial Mercedes F1 news web site, which has been set up to support and provide news and opinions on Mercedes and its drivers. However, while I may be expressing my opinions, the facts that I write about are true. I also have to wonder why these people are reading my articles, if they are not fans of Mercedes of Lewis? Maybe just to cause trouble?
Those few words spoken by Sir Lewis have put hope into the hearts of so many of his fans that he would come back this year to fight for his eight championship. He knows the regulations have changed, the cars are more equal, and that is the sort of challenge he loves. He is the best, and he wants to fight the best, just as he did when he fought Sebastian Vettel from 2017 until 2019, when Ferrari had a very fast car. He has an injustice to put right, and with the sort of fire in his belly that he demonstrated in the last four races of 2021, he will make 2022 a very exciting season.
Welcome back to social media Sir Lewis, we missed you!
