Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff doesn’t feel sorry for Michael Masi and says he “can’t estimate what pressure the race director was under”, but “the rules are the rules”.

After Lewis Hamilton failed to win the 2021 Formula 1 title due to race director Michael Masi blatantly ignoring the rules, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff says his team has a “score to settle” in 2022.

In an interview with RTL, Wolff said Masi’s decisions in 2021 were “very polarizing and not always easy to understand”.

After the FIA’s investigation into the controversial ending of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the governing organization decided to remove Masi from the position of race director.

Asked by RTL whether he “shed a tear” for Masi after his removal was announced, Wolff simply replied: “No”.

In an interview with Spanish newspaper Marca, Wolff said he doesn’t believe the race result was manipulated for entertainment purposes, but said Masi’s disregard for the rules cannot be excused.

“Stefano Domenicali [Formula 1 CEO], for example, is a real racer and would not be interested in interfering in races just for the sake of entertainment.

“I can’t estimate what pressure the race director was under at that moment, but the rules are the rules,” the Austrian concluded.
