After being let go by Haas, as a consequence of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Nikita Mazepin revealed he received a message of support from George Russell.
As Russia faces more and more sanctions due to the country’s invasion of Ukraine, the Haas Formula 1 team decided to sever all ties with their title sponsor Uralkali, and subsequently with Nikita Mazepin, who got his drive as part of the sponsorship deal.
Mazepin has since revealed he has received numerous messages of support from fellow drivers, and named George Russell as being one of them.
When Russell was asked to give more details about the nature of the message, due to the sensitivity of the situation, the Briton revealed it was not political.
“There was absolutely nothing political,” he explained.

“I think all of our views, of what is going on in the world, are absolutely united. But obviously for Nikita, I’ve known him personally for a very long time. I was team-mates with him.
“Obviously, regardless of his background, he is a driver who has dreamt of Formula 1 his whole career and reached it.
“Now that dream has disappeared for the obvious reasons. I just said ‘Keep you chin up’, as simple as that.
“Nothing political in it. Just personal,” Russell concluded.
