After Lewis Hamilton’s spectacular drive from P7 to P2 at the Hungarian Grand Prix, George Russell says his team-mate did “an amazing job”.
Lewis Hamilton’s drive from P7 to P2 at the Hungarian Grand Prix was nothing short of spectacular. This fact was not lost on third-placed George Russell, who immediately praised his team-mate after the race.
“Lewis did an amazing job, and obviously had far superior pace at the end because I think he had a very strong middle stint,” the Briton said.
“I think as a team, we’ve got a lot to be proud of. We did everything right, for both of us today, to give us as a team the best opportunity to fight for victory.
“Unfortunately it didn’t go our way today, but as a team we did everything right.”
Asked if he thinks his first career win is close, George said:

“Yeah, definitely. It was always going to be tricky afternoon because there was rain in the air throughout, and usually if you’re in pole position it’s spitting, you’re pretty disappointed.
“But I was on the Soft tyre, so I was kind of rubbing my hands together and made a really good start.
“The first four laps were really strong, I think we got a three second gap to Carlos [Sainz], and then unfortunately, the rain sort of stopped.
“The medium tyres came into their own, but we still had a good first stint, and we pitted early both occasions to try and cover Max, and cover the Ferraris.
“Ultimately, Max was too fast for us today,” Russell concluded.
