Toto Wolff says Lewis Hamilton’s contract extension is “just a matter of him physically being back in Europe, sticking our heads together, wrestling a bit, and then leaving the room with white smoke after a few hours”.

Lewis Hamilton’s current Mercedes contract will expire at the end of 2023. However, he and Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff have said on several occasions that they plan on extending the deal.

Now, Wolff says the contract extension is just a matter of formality.

“As for contract discussions, we have a full year to go,” the Austrian said.

“We are so aligned, in the last 10 years our relationship has grown.

“It’s just a matter of him physically being back in Europe, sticking our heads together, wrestling a bit, and then leaving the room with white smoke after a few hours,” Wolff concluded.

At the same time French publication Sportune reports that the new deal is expected to last for two years, which means Lewis would definitely stay in F1 until the end of 2025.

Not only that, but Sportune reports that Lewis would receive a raise and get £40 million per season.

The publication also writes that the Briton offered to remain on his current £31 million a year salary, but Mercedes wants to give him a raise.

Of course, those are at the moment just unsubstantiated rumours, the important piece of news is that according to Wolff, a new contract is a certainty.
