Red Bull team boss Christian Horner comments on whether James Vowles’ move to Williams will give Mercedes influence over the team.
Mercedes’ long-time Motorsport Strategy Director James Vowles will leave Mercedes ahead of the 2023 season to become the new team principal of Williams.
Mercedes has already been supplying Williams with engines and certain other components, so with Vowles now becoming the team’s boss, some are fearing this means that Mercedes will now have influence over the legendary British team.
Both Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff, and Vowles himself, have denied any such allegations, but Red Bull team boss Christian Horner says only these two teams know what has been agreed.
“I don’t know James particularly well, but he’s obviously a very capable guy,” Horner said.

“Williams will have done their due diligence and research and I think it’s great that they’re giving him the chance to make that step up.
“So I think that can only be good news for Williams. And is there anything attached to that?
“Williams would have obviously done what’s right for them and right for their business.
“But only they will know what has been agreed for that early release to have happened,” the Briton concluded.
