While discussing the possibility of Lewis Hamilton leaving F1, Red Bull team boss Christian Horner said the Briton’s retirement would leave Mercedes “pretty exposed”.

Lewis Hamilton’s current Mercedes contract will expire at the end of 2023, however, both the Briton and the team have said on numerous occasions that they intend to extend the deal.

However, taking into account the fact that Lewis is 38 years old, many observers are speculating that his retirement will come sooner rather than later.

The speculation was especially strong last year, while Mercedes was facing numerous difficulties with their troubled car.

Netflix’s ‘Drive to Survive’ filmed Red Bull’s team boss Christian Horner last year discussing the possibility of Lewis’ retirement inside the paddock.

“If he did retire? Who on earth would they [Mercedes] take?” Horner could be heard saying.

“That would drop them really in the s*** if he decides to retire.”

Later, while Netflix was interviewing him, Horner further explained his point.

“What are Toto’s options if Lewis were to retire? It leaves them pretty exposed,” the Briton concluded.
