F1 Insider claims that Mercedes approached Red Bull’ Chief Technical Officer Adrian Newey to try to get him to switch teams. Helmut Marko insinuates that this is true.

F1 Insider recently reported that Mercedes approached Adrian Newey and tried to get him to make a switch from Red Bull to the German team.

According to F1 Insider, “shortly before Red Bull’s mastermind Adrian Newey extended his contract with Red Bull a week ago, he received a phone call from a former Red Bull employee, who is now one of the personal assistants of Mercedes team boss and shareholder Toto Wolff”.

The report goes on to state that F1 Insider reached out to Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko and asked him about this rumour.

“Mr Wolff may not seem to have complete confidence in his own people to fix the problems with their car,” Marko allegedly said, obviously insinuating that there was some contact.

The significance of this rumour is that Newey is the most respected aerodynamicist in Formula 1 history, and is believed to be the main person responsible for Red Bull’s current dominance.

It has to be said, however, that this report is completely unsubstantiated, and as such it is very hard to determine if the story is true.
