Damon Hill thinks “there’s got to be something” in Mercedes’ sidepods

With Mercedes’ big upgrade right around the corner, Damon Hill says he’s “very excited to see what they are going to bring” to Imola.

When Mercedes introduced its innovative zero-sidepod car design in 2022 pre-season testing, many thought it could be a revolutionary concept that will take the team to the top.

It did not turn out that way, as Mercedes has not been able to consistently challenge the top teams and fight for victories.

Many have since blamed the team’s poor performance on the sidepods concept, but Mercedes has consistently dismissed its importance.

Now, they are set to introduce a significant upgrade package this weekend at Imola, and the hope is that it will help the team get back on the right development path.

The team already promised the W14 will receive new suspension parts and bodywork, and this means the sidepods will most likely look a bit different.

While talking about this of the F1 Nation podcast, 1996 F1 champion Damon Hill said he believes the sidepods change could be significant.

“They talk about the sidepod,” the Briton said on the F1 Nation podcast.

“That has been the big bone of contention over the last 2 years. Why do their sidepods look so different to everyone else?

“Then people in Mercedes say it’s a small part of the aero package and you’re making too much of it. But there’s got to be something in it.

“We’re very excited to see what they are going to bring,” Hill concluded.
