Ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix, Toto Wolff said Max Verstappen “is just on a different level” and added “it p***es me off”. After the race Christian Horner was asked to respond.
After Max Verstappen’s dominant performance in Spanish Grand Prix Qualifying, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff praised the Dutch driver, but admitted his dominance ‘p***es him off’.
Asked how far behind Red Bull the upgraded W14 is now, Wolff said:
“I would love to give an answer but I simply don’t know. Verstappen is just on a different level. It p***es me off to say that but that is the reality.
“It is a meritocracy, they have done the best job, the driver is excellent and they are just far away.
“This is something only we have in our hands to get under control,” Wolff concluded.
When asked about this after the race, Red Bull’s team boss Christian Horner said: “Losing hurts.”

“I don’t pay a great deal of attention to it,” he continued.
“What matters is the score sheet at the end of the day, and that’s looking pretty healthy.
“We spent seven years trying to get into a winning position, and losing hurts.
“We’ve worked very hard to get into this position, I think the whole team as a unit, and not just Max, is operating at such a high level and we have a phenomenal car.
“We’ve got two great drivers and Max is just continuing to evolve as a driver, he’s just become more and more polished and the capacity he has within the car is truly impressive,” Horner concluded.
