Recently Toto Wolff said “there wasn’t huge hype” around Max Verstappen in junior categories. Red Bull advisor Dr Helmut Marko gives his response.

In a recent interview with ESPN, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff revealed he had spoken to Max Verstappen and his father Jos, while the Dutch driver was still in junior categories.

However, he did note that “back in the day I think there wasn’t huge hype around Max”.

This comment obviously did not sit well with Red Bull advisor Dr Helmut Marko, who scoffed at Wolff for making it.

“His talent wasn’t visible enough in Formula 3?” Marko told Algemeen Dagblad newspaper.

“Then I don’t know exactly what Toto was looking at.

“When I saw Max at the Norisring, it was already completely clear to me that he had something special,” the Austrian concluded.

Wolff did however add that “the insiders knew that Max probably was in an inferior package and in his first year, and the insiders knew there was a very good one coming, but it wasn’t clear that he was that good at that stage”.
