After a Safety Car period at the British Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton on soft tyres was trying to overtake Lando Norris on hards. He was unsuccessful and Toto Wolff explains why.
After the British Grand Prix, Toto Wolff commented on McLaren’s improved pace compared to Mercedes.
“We are just lacking the straight line speed at the moment, here at Silverstone particularly,” Toto said.
“It was close. We performed well compared to Qualifying, so it was a solid day.”
In the final stages of the British Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton was chasing Lando Norris for P2, but could not overtake the fellow Briton.
The puzzling thing is that Norris was able to hold Hamilton off, even though he was on hard tyres, and Lewis was on softs.

Toto was asked to explain why Lewis was unsuccessful.
“The tyres went off, but they had the better car, with the hard tyre being able to hold us behind on the soft. It’s just straight line speed.”
The Austrian added Mercedes now needs to catch up to McLaren and Red Bull.
“It will be very interesting to see on the more twisty circuits. In any case they made a big step ahead and it’s good for us to see how quickly we can catch up.
“We have to go for them and the Red Bulls,” Wolff concluded.
