Contrary to speculation, Toto Wolff says Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes are “not talking about an ambassadorial role post his retirement, nor is that part of the contract negotiations”.

Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes are currently engaged in contract negotiations, which have been going on for some time.

Many have speculated that Lewis’ new deal will include a long-term Mercedes ambassadorial role after his retirement, and that this is making the negotiations more complicated, but team boss Toto Wolff says that’s not the case.

“We’re not talking about an ambassadorial role post his retirement, nor is that part of the contract negotiations,” the Austrian said.

“I think he has many years to go as a driver within this team, and therefore it’s only about cleaning things up in the contract.

“I know it looks a little bit [uncertain] and this not being done and dusted. But it’s simply down to trivial things that just need to be cleaned up in contracts.”

Toto added he cannot say when the deal will be done exactly.

“I don’t want to give you a date, because it’s lawyers speaking to lawyers.

“It’s not material things anymore, but you’ve got to give it time and I don’t want to commit to a date,” Wolff concluded.
