Amid another round of ‘Hamilton to Ferrari’ rumours, Ferrari’s team boss Frederic Vasseur says he talks to Lewis “at every grand prix”, and adds “clearly if they see us together in the paddock a fuss comes out”.

Over the past two years there has been no shortage of ‘Hamilton to Ferrari’ rumours, and the latest came just last week, when Italian journalist Leo Turrini reported that Ferrari president John Elkann personally contacted Lewis to try and lure him to the Italian outfit.

According to this (completely unsubstantiated) report, Lewis declined as he is keen on continuing his relationship with Mercedes.

Amid these rumours, Ferrari’s team principal Frederic Vasseur, who worked with Hamilton in his junior career, talked about their relationship in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I talk to him at every grand prix,” Vasseur said.

“He raced for me twenty years ago and we’re still close. I helped him when he went to McLaren at the start of his F1 career and we talk occasionally. Clearly if they see us together in the paddock a fuss comes out.

“I don’t want to compare him to our drivers, it wouldn’t make sense. But the contribution of a top driver isn’t just driving, it’s also technical, strategy, help in hiring an engineer.

“And in this case, if you have Hamilton, [Max] Verstappen but also [Charles] Leclerc, it’s easier.

“Anyone who works in F1 is passionate about racing, they like working with champions,” the Frenchman concluded.
