James Allison says the new floor Mercedes will introduce at the United States Grand Prix should make the W14 “be good at any circuit for the remainder of the year”.
At the United States Grand Prix, Mercedes will introduce its final significant upgrade for the W14. The team will install a new floor which is in line with the team’s development direction for their 2024 car.
On the F1 Nation podcast, Mercedes’ Technical Director James Allison explained what the team expects from the upgrade.
“It should be good at any circuit for the remainder of the year,” the Briton said.
“It’s not transformative, [but it] should be about a tenth of a second.

“It’s in the direction we think is decent, both for producing downforce in the right place, and hopefully being resistant to the bounciness that all these cars nibble at as soon as you try and get much downforce from them.”
McLaren is currently Mercedes’ closest rival when it comes to on-track pace, and Allison believes the upgrade will bring his team “up on level terms”.
“At a Suzuka type track, they have the edge on us. At a slower type track, maybe we have some things they don’t, but I’m not sure what they have left to bring to their car.
“Hopefully the floor that we are going to pop on the car at the next race in Austin could bring us up on level terms in any of the races to come,” the Briton concluded.
