Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff says George Russell is “a young, strong driver, racing on a team with the best driver and challenging him, trying to beat him while he learns”.
George Russell entered Mercedes with a bang in 2022, and managed to finish the season ahead of his more experienced team-mate Lewis Hamilton.
It has to be noted that in 2022 Mercedes also started struggling with the performance of its car, so the team looked to Lewis to conduct ‘experiments’ in the first part of the season, in order to help improve it. However, it cannot be denied that George did an amazing job.
In 2023, things turned out a bit differently, and George ultimately finished the season 59 points behind his team-mate.
Despite this, in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff said the team is completely satisfied with the young Briton’s performance.

“When you do well and expectations get high, life gets complicated, but I don’t see any pressure on him,” the Austrian said.
“George is a young, strong driver, racing on a team with the best driver and challenging him, trying to beat him while he learns. But he has met all our expectations.
“When I think of his age and talent, he is someone I would always want on one of my teams,” Wolff concluded.
