After becoming the youngest polesitter in Formula 1 history, Kimi Antonelli says “it would have been cool” to see what George Russell could have done, had he not encountered car issues.

Kimi Antonelli took pole at Chinese Grand Prix Qualifying and became the youngest polesitter in Formula 1 history.

His team-mate George Russell qualified in P2, after having only one run in Q3, due to issues with his car earlier in the session.

With this pole, Antonelli – who is 19 years, 6 months, 18 days old – eclipsed previous record holder Sebastian Vettel, who was 21 years, 2 months, 11 days old, when he put his car on pole for the 2008 Italian Grand Prix.

“Yeah, it was a pretty clean session, so I am really happy,” Antonelli said after the session.

“George had an issue, so it would have been cool to see him with two [runs], but it was a really good session.

“It was clean, and there were no mistakes, so I am looking forward to the race.

“I saw George had the issue, but I just tried to keep my focus, stay calm and deliver a good lap.

“Which I did at the end,” the Italian concluded.
